Walton-Desir Blasts Ali’s ‘Selective’ Approach to Parliament

Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) leader and lone parliamentarian Amanza Walton-Desir has accused President Irfaan Ali of treating Guyana’s Parliament as an institution to be engaged only when it suits the Executive, backing WIN and APNU’s refusal to participate in what she describes as a selectively arranged presidential briefing.

Walton-Desir’s broadside came after Ali met Tuesday at the Office of the President with government members of the Parliamentary Sub-Committee on Foreign Relations after no Opposition MP attended. The President’s office said all committee members had been invited through the Speaker.

The confrontation exposes a growing dispute over the boundaries between the Executive and Legislature in the new 65-member National Assembly, where the PPP holds 36 seats and the combined Opposition holds 29.
