Four Sittings in 299 Days: Guyana’s 13th Parliament Faces Questions Over Legislative Scrutiny

Guyana’s 13th Parliament has held just four recorded sittings in its first 299 days, a sharp departure from the pace of parliamentary activity under the previous three Parliaments and one that raises questions about legislative scrutiny, executive accountability and the functioning of parliamentary democracy.

The 13th Parliament was convened on November 3, 2025. By August 29, 2026, official National Assembly records showed four dated sittings — November 3, January 26, February 2 and June 5. A fifth sitting is listed in the parliamentary records but without a date.

The contrast with recent Parliaments is striking.
