30% of drainage and irrigation budget expended for 2026-Mid Year report

(Kaieteur News) – The 2026 mid-year report has revealed that 30.16% of the allocated sum for drainage and irrigation has been expended for that period, with government focusing on flood relief and improved water access.

The report highlighted the continued investment in drainage and irrigation infrastructure, which will support national agriculture and “protect households by reducing flooding during the rainy season and improve access to water during the dry season. In the first half of 2026, government spent $24.7 billion of the $81.9 billion budgeted for this year.”

The interventions undertaken so far include the maintenance and rehabilitation of canals, drains and other structures countrywide. Additionally, works are progressing on eight pumps in Regions Three, Four, Five and Six, which are slated to be completed by the end of this year. Works on the major Hope-like canals in Regions Five and Six are also progressing, while works on the structures in Region Three have commenced.
