Field athletes Eli’jah Titus and Peyton Winter showed their class at the third leg of the Keshorn Walcott Golden League Athletics series at Toco Secondary School grounds on January 31, sweeping their respective age groups across the shot put, discus, and javelin events.
Fresh from a commanding performance at the Wright Foundation’s Power in the Field Classic a week earlier, Winter flexed her muscles in the girls’ under-20 category. In the discus, Burnely’s Winter threw a distance of 35.05 metres on her second attempt to get the better of D’Abadie Progressive Athletic Club’s Sofia Quamina (29.89m). Quamina was again second best in the shot put, with Winter topping the five-woman field with a 12.63m mark on her second try. Quamina saved her best for last with a throw of 8.34m.
The javelin event was more straightforward for Winter as her opening throw of 28.67m earned her a facile victory over Toco Tafac’s Isabella Solomon (17.24m).
Titus, who threw to a boys’ under-15 discus and shot put double in leg two of the Golden League, was back for more with his treble haul in Toco. Representing Dookie’s Athletics Development team, Titus hurled the shot a distance of 11.46m to defeat Toco Sporting Academy’s Richawn Mahabir (7.82m), while he had more breathing room in the discus with a 27.34 mark, which was too much for Sangre Grande Secondary’s Jayvon Williams (17.78m).
And after opening the javelin with two scratches, Titus dug deep on his third try by launching to a distance of 29.58m, edging out Toco Tafac’s Samuel Roberts, who threw 25.65m on his final attempt.
Roberts’ teammate Jenique McLaren showed a clean pair of heels as she won the girls’ under-20 60m, 200m and 400m events. Running out of heat two in the 200m, McLaren proved to be the best of nine competitors with her time of 30.44 seconds, bettering the Phoenix pair of Jasmine Queeley (32.05s) and Kioni Devenish (32.25s).
Over 60 metres, McLaren sprinted a time of 8.25s to top Point Fortin New Jets’ Zada Charles (8.46s) in a swift second heat. Meanwhile, in the 400m, McLaren ran a time of one minute, 14.24 seconds (1:14.24) to take top honours and stretch her points tally on the day to 24.
Also among the winners in leg three of the series were: Daniel Alfred (boys’ under-15 200m & 400m); Aiden Beard (boys’ under-9 60m & 150m); Aiyden Benjamin (boys’ under-20 60m & 200m); Marcion Davis (boys’ under-17 discus & shot put); Johnathan Francois (boys’ under-20 400m & 800m); Samara Moses (girs’ under-11 60m & 150m); Yanique Stewart (girls’ under-15 60m & javelin) and Philmon Vialva (boys’ under-20 discus & shot put).
In the boys’ under-20 1,600m event, Toco Titans’ Darreon Thom thrilled when he lapped his competitors to win in 5:23.53, achieving the feat while running barefoot.
The Golden League series is scheduled to wrap up with its finale at the Diego Martin Sporting Complex on March 14.
