(Kaieteur News) – Today, I must ask: “What do they know of Mackenzie Sports Club who only MSC know?”
C.L.R. James famously asked, “What do they know of cricket who only cricket know?” In Beyond a Boundary, he argued that understanding cricket requires more than knowledge of its rules, scores and techniques.
I now pen this fourth letter on the MSC to argue that anyone seeking to understand the impact of this facility—including the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport—must appreciate its significance beyond the playing field. This Mecca for sports in Mackenzie, Linden, holds particular meaning for the people who journeyed from New Amsterdam, West Coast Berbice, East Coast Demerara, Georgetown, West Demerara and the small islands of the Caribbean to work with the bauxite company in the Upper Demerara area before Independence.
