A miner died early Saturday morning during an altercation at 14 Miles, Issano, Middle Mazaruni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni). Dead is Shawn Abrams of Charity, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam). Police said the incident occurred at about 12:45h on Saturday. Reports are that a 31-year-old miner of Canje, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) has been identified as the suspect and is being sought by police. According to investigators, Abrams, three friends and the suspect were consuming alcohol at a bar in the 14 Miles Backdam area when an altercation developed between Abrams and the suspect. One of the men reportedly intervened and separated the two, but during the intervention, he observed what appeared to be bloodstains on Abrams’ vest. Police said the suspect subsequently ran from the shop, while Abrams walked a short distance before collapsing. Detectives later visited and processed the scene, where Abrams’ motionless body was found on the ground in front of the counter.
Police have also conducted checks at several camps in the 14 Miles Backdam area in an effort to locate the suspect. He has not yet been found. Investigations are ongoing.
