(Kaieteur News) – The Office of the Leader of the Opposition is calling for an immediate 100% salary increase for all 90,000 public sector workers, pointing to escalating inflation, foreign currency shortages, and state procurement corruption as evidence that current economic policies are failing Guyanese citizens.
Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) General Secretary Odessa Primus outlined the party’s economic and social demands while addressing the government’s management of the MV Barima maritime disaster.
WIN General Secretary Odessa Primus emphasised the gap between reported macro-economic indicators and the daily cost-of-living challenges faced by ordinary workers. Highlighting current market prices where a single bag of basic groceries costs between $15,000 and $20,000 GYD, the opposition demanded that the public sector minimum wage be doubled before the end of the year from its current monthly level of $102,346 GYD ($490 USD).
