Goolsarran heads to court over Sharma’s continued occupancy of Auditor General’s Office

(Kaieteur News) – Former Auditor General Anand Goolsarran has indicated his intention to initiate legal proceedings against the current Auditor General, Deodat Sharma, over his continued occupancy of the constitutional office after attaining the age of 68.

According to a letter dispatched by Goolsarran’s attorney, Christopher Ram, on July 31, the contention is that the office of Auditor General is vacated by operation of the Constitution once the holder attains the age prescribed by Parliament. The prescribed age, Ram argues, is 68, and no power exists to extend the Auditor General’s tenure beyond that age.

According to the correspondence, Sharma attained the age of 68 in March 2026 and continues to occupy the office. He had written to President Irfaan Ali in February this year requesting a two-year extension.
