Opposition Senator Faris Al-Rawi raised national security and constitutional concerns on Tuesday during his contributions on proposed amendments to the country's citizenship laws. He pointed to potential loopholes he believes could be exploited, including by descendants of foreign terrorist fighters.
Speaking during the sixth sitting of the Senate on September 17, Al-Rawi focused on Section 17 of the Constitution, which currently allows citizenship by descent only through parents.
The proposed amendment seeks to expand eligibility to include grandparents, allowing individuals born abroad to claim citizenship through a grandparent, even if the grandparent was not born in TT.
