…says some access routes impassable
The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) has expressed concern over the impact of ongoing heavy rainfall on mining operations across the country, stating that widespread flooding and damaged infrastructure are disrupting production. In a statement issued on Friday, the Association said persistent inclement weather has flooded several mining areas and damaged key access roads within mining districts, making it increasingly difficult for miners to reach work sites. According to the GGDMA, the conditions have forced some operators to temporarily shut down camps as extensive flooding has rendered several areas inaccessible and unsuitable for mining activities. The association pointed to conditions along the Puruni River as an example of the severity of the situation. It reported that the river has overflowed its banks to the extent that the natural channel is no longer clearly distinguishable from the surrounding landscape. The resulting strong currents and expanded waterway have led to the suspension of pontoon crossings, further restricting movement and access to mining operations. Managing Director of the GGDMA Avalon Jagnandan described the situation in the mining districts as serious, noting that miners are facing major challenges at a time when gold prices are at record highs.
