(Kaieteur News) – The Private Sector Commission (PSC) has defended the business community’s contribution to Guyana’s development following Culture, Youth and Sport Minister Charles Ramson Jr.’s call for greater private-sector investment in Mashramani, insisting that its commitment to the country cannot be measured by sponsorship of a single event.
In a statement responding to the minister’s recent comments, the PSC said businesses have consistently supported national development through investments in education, youth development, entrepreneurship, community welfare, disaster relief and cultural activities. The Commission acknowledged the importance of Mashramani and welcomed discussions on strengthening the national festival and expanding participation. However, it maintained that any assessment of the private sector’s contribution must take into account the wide range of initiatives supported throughout the year.
“The private sector’s commitment to Guyana cannot fairly be measured by its sponsorship of any single event,” the PSC stated. The response follows comments by Minister Ramson at the launch of the Mashramani 2027 calendar of activities, where he called on businesses to play a more meaningful role in financing the celebrations. The minister had expressed satisfaction with the festival’s development over the past three years but warned that the Government might be forced to take a firmer stance in future engagements if adequate private-sector support was not forthcoming.
