Guyana Government Advances Public Construction Projects Across the Country

Vendors at the New Amsterdam Municipal Market are asking for reconstruction to begin in January 2027 instead of November, warning that demolition work could cut into their busiest Christmas sales period. Mayor Wainwright McIntosh has taken their concerns to the Local Government Ministry, which is expected to meet vendors and market officials this week.

The Ministry of Home Affairs will spend about $45 million more on the New Amsterdam Prison in Region Six for a kitchen extension, infirmary floor sealing and storage room changes, as the $1.7 billion rebuild nears completion. Twenty-six contractors have bid for the work, which is meant to improve the prison’s infrastructure, living conditions and operations.

The Housing Ministry is building a $600 million truck parking facility at Number 75 Village, Region Six, with most of the 10.6-acre site already complete and the rest due in two to three weeks. Minister Collin Croal says the project should help move trucks out of residential areas, easing community complaints and environmental concerns.

A parking lot for Guyana’s new National Security Tower at Brickdam is estimated to cost $49.625 million, with 68 contractors bidding for the Ministry of Home Affairs project. The tower, built to replace the Brickdam Police Station destroyed by fire in 2021, is nearing completion and is expected to become the country’s new police headquarters by late 2026.

Seven firms from China, India, Turkey and Trinidad and Tobago have bid to rehabilitate and upgrade the 27.1-kilometre Mahaica-to-Abary Bridge Road corridor on the East Coast of Demerara. Funded through a World Bank-backed Integrated Transport Corridors Project, the work includes a dual carriageway, bridges, drainage and utility relocation, aiming to improve safer and more resilient travel in Guyana.

Another 210 houses are under construction at Palmyra, Region Six, bringing the total completed or underway there to about 310, while the housing ministry says beneficiaries at Providence, Overwinning and Glasgow should start seeing their lots before the end of 2026. Minister Collin Croal also announced a new georeferenced identification system to reduce land disputes and said electricity and water upgrades are being pursued.

Guyana’s Culture, Youth and Sport Ministry is seeking contractors for two cricket academies at Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, and Albion, Region Six, with estimated costs of $745.3 million and $552.9 million. Bids open on November 19, 2026, as the government moves ahead with plans to develop world-class facilities for young cricketers. The projects come as the 2026 budget sets aside $6 billion for sport.
