AS the world observes International Women’s Day today and, after years of Hindu women in this country advocating for legislative changes that would allow them to include their profession on their marriage certificate, they may soon receive a breakthrough.
Since the days of colonialism, Hindu women, unlike their grooms or those belonging to other religions, were not asked to state such details on their marriage certificate.
Yesterday, however, the Office of the Attorney General announced via a media release that following a collaborative process led by Minister in the Office of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs Renuka Sagramsingh-Sooklal, steps have been taken for the consideration of potential amendments to the Hindu Marriage Regulations under the Hindu Marriage Act, Chap 45:03.
