NEWLY-APPOINTED Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs Senator David Nakhid said yesterday for far too long sports in Trinidad and Tobago has only been seen as “a hobby and a by-issue”.
The time has now arrived for sports to be “front and centre” and he intends on making it this way by working hand-in-hand with Sport and Youth Affairs Minister Phillip Watts.
After being sworn in at President’s House, Port of Spain, yesterday, Nakhid, a former national and international footballer who also served as an Opposition senator in the 12th Republican Parliament (August 28, 2020-March 18, 2025), said the Ministry will be transforming sports based on a model never before used in Trinidad and Tobago. He explained it involves implementing policies in schools throughout the country where a lot of sporting talent usually goes by unrecognised and therefore, not capitalised on.
