THE families of a victim of the Paria diving tragedy and a security guard killed in the line of duty are seeking some degree of compensation under the Workmen's Compensation Act, according to two public notices issued by the Judiciary in Newsday on June 4. These were posted by Renee Thompson, Assistant Registrar, Supreme Court.
The first notice said dependants of Fyzal Kurban of Plaisance Park, Pointe-a-Pierre, who died on February 28, 2022, must appear before the commissioner by electronic means on July 7 at 10.15 am. Dependants must provide proof of their relationship. In the absence of dependants, the commissioner shall proceed with the hearing in a manner that is just and appropriate, the notice said.
The act says commissioners shall be masters (judges) of the High Court (section 31) and shall determine any liability to pay compensation (section 30).
